We have recently formed an Online Advisory Council at my organization (a nonprofit whose mission is to grow community leaders) to serve as hosts of our online community. Our goal is that this group will start and encourage conversations, post relevant content, and demonstrate the value of the community. We invited them to our office, had a box lunch and talked about our vision for the community and how they could contribute. The group seemed very interested in getting involved. We have about 12 members in the council and asked them to sign up for a month of hosting in the community, with 2 hosts per month. We start in July (today). I'll post back on how well this works.

Members of this group may be interested in a discussion on the Free-Range Content group about a recently started online community. While the focus in the FRC group is about getting users to create quality content, some of the approaches used and challenges facing this community may be of interest.

Hi everyone! Glad to be here. Ning is a wonderful opportunity for us to build this niche community of our own-for our profession. This community was recommended by one of my collegues. I'm looking forward to learning and sharing tips, tidbits, and getting advice in similar struggles we may face as online content/community managers and leaders! Thanks! ~ V

Since I started this group, I suppose I should start the conversation. After all, that's the frustration with the community I'm working with. There are lots of viewers, but few posters. I saw something today that sums up the challenge: you have to find a way to get people to choose the benefits of a community over clinging to their privacy. And judging by my absence on this site, there's also the challenge of limited time to give to an online community.

Are any of you in the group also currently managing online communities? Have you found a way to encourage participation?
