Hello group -

I work out of my home office near Austin, TX as a freelance technical writer. I have steady clients, but am always on the lookout for new ones.

I agree that finding new clients can be difficult because there are still so many companies that insist on on-site work. I'm doing my small part to educate the world about the advantages of telecommuting (for the worker and the company), but it's slow going.

Just wanted to say "hi" since I just joined your group.

Currently watching an online video conference on telework at CDC. Sounds like something I might be able to do more of in the future.

I'm an old hand at telecommuting. I worked from Spain for 7.5 years as a contractor. Now I have a full time gig, and I'm telecommuting from Oregon with teams in MA, NY, VA, and elsewhere. I'd say the biggest problem for telecommuting is landing jobs. I got by on two trumps -- a rare specialty (FrameMaker plugin dev), and a reputation with a specific contract company. But honestly, as time wore on, I did more programming and less writing. Especially after the dot.com bust, remote writing jobs seemed to vanish.

I want to think communities like this one will help telecommuting. It's ridiculous to spend the resources we do to move people around. For the industrial revolution, transport of commodities, resources, and product was necessary. For the information revolution, the only material that has to move around is human flesh. And in fact, it doesn't have to move all that much. Moving people around the way we do is proving to be a disaster. Let's hope the industry gets that clue.

I need tips on where to look for telecommuting work. Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, is a remote beach community where I live. I've worked on a couple of short contracts from home, but I'd like to find a long term telecommute opportunity. Any ideas? Thanks!

I will be retiring from corporate employment soon and want to establish a telework based income. Any ideas?
