Interested to see if this takes off. With the multitude of mailing lists, blogs, websites and wikis already in place there is a lot of competition for eyeball time.

Indeed. The difference between a social network and mailing lists, email listservs, etc. are quite vast. I expect the social network to replace these outmoded communication channels as they provide a much higher level of interaction and various ways to visual information.
