You asked: "It's been awhile since I worked on a product that was being translated/localized but we will be looking at doing so for some of my current products. Is there a resource or list of recommendations that I should start to look at?
As I update products written by others, I have been trying to prepare the ground by eliminating obvious problems (contractions, brand names, ackward formats, etc,.) but I could probabaly be doing more. Any hints would be appreciated.
"

I have various resources that I can direct you to. Most of them are not online. Give me a couple of days to search through my archives and I can share some useful guidelines for you. I will take the findings and post them on the L10N&G11N Forum. Thank you for the great question.

For the most part I generate HTML help screens and printed user manuals for the Gaming industry. I work for Maxgaming, a wholly owned subsidiary of UNiTAB which has recently been bought by Tattersals. The whole conglomerate is called the Tatts Group. Maxgaming owns and manages gaming machines in pubs and clubs. I believe we own the largest network of gaming machines in the world. And we're currently creating a cutting edge Wide Area Gaming Monitoring and Management system. All very exciting stuff. Other than that I make sure our documentation is up to our corporate standard, while maintaining our SharePoint intranet in cooperation with one other tech writer and the IT Administrator.

Hi Maria,

I am pretty happy as a BA. I do a lot more actual writing as a BA, as opposed to a tech writer. While I was comfortable with creating and testing Help content and working in RoboHelp and FrameMaker and Dreamweaver, the actual tech writer work had as much (or more) to do with preparing the vehicles for delivering content as it did in actually generating content.

As a BA, I am more directly involved in the direction of the product I work on. I am involved in actual decisions about how the system is going to work, and I work with a cross-functional team to determine system enhancements and get approvals for documents. So it has been really satisfying to have my career go in this direction.

We had an established software development process in which the BA's role was already defined and established. I would not be that keen about having to implement or establish a development process in a company.

Also, the pay as a BA is a lot better.
