I've been writing for the Biotech field for 20+ years (yikes!) My group has started the migration to Structured Frame, with CMS down the line. We have lots to learn about simplified/controlled English, content management, reuse, and reuse for translation. The Content Wrangler Community emerged at just the right time.

We are taking baby steps at this time. We have a solid EDD based on good information presentation and templates, our team has put a lot of effort into refining, testing, and training. We have a vague goal for simplified English, any suggestions for hard goals and milestones in the interim before we have a tool to enforce? We have looked at Tedopres and also Acrolinx, which seems to offer natural language processing - very cool demo (but also very expensive). We are also in the process of figuring out how to evaluate the right CMS for us (still refining the right questions to ask before we know what to do next) and want to make sure we pass quality information only into the CMS.

Hi Marty,
What type of model are you using for structured FM? When I was at Tellabs we had some great success using Information Mapping, which could migrate over to DITA. On top of that, we were building a Simplified English environment with help from Tedopres. What kind of SE environment are you building? Are you building your own terminology database? Good luck on these projects! I hope to hear more about them.

Marty,

May I quote this portion of your response in my next article, "I think the Agile, iterative approach is great, but I miss the up-front, fleshed-out spec that gave me the full picture early in the project"?

I think it's an excellent question and a concern expressed by many new Agilists.

Let me know soon since I have to publish to Scot Abel this week.

Thanks,

Eric

Best Practices of Global Production Information

Now, more than ever, organizations need to effectively communicate global product information if they are to operate successfully on the world stage. Traditionally, though, organizations have faced a fragmented landscape of technology solutions that are bolted together, but don’t work together. Organizations have had to integrate these technologies themselves and cope with the resulting overhead.
It doesn’t have to be like this. Read our new whitepaper, Best Practices of Global Product Information to find out how you can streamline and enhance the processes you use of communicate global product information.

The Flavors of CM: Content Management vs Document Management

There are many different perspectives around on what content management is and isn’t and what a Content Management system needs to do. According to that font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, “A content management system (CMS) is computer software used to create, edit, manage, and publish content in a consistently organized fashion.
