Stop Writing Manuals

No-one reads the documentation anyway, so why do we persist in writing user guides, instruction manuals and all the other types of document-centric information silos that we all quietly loathe creating in the first place? Unless you have a contractual agreement to compile information into a document, it’s our job to figure out how best to [...]

Learning Lessons

I love making mistakes. Really I do. Sure they can be painful, costly and time consuming but let’s look at the positives here, every time you make a mistake you can learn something new. How great is that! As part of our release cycle, we conduct a series of retrospective meetings, one per team, in which [...]

The heat is on

Just a quick note to say it’ll be a little on the quiet side here over the next two weeks as I’m going to be a little hectic. I’ve got a product release (deadline of a week tomorrow), a new developer website to launch (deadline of a week on Monday), and after that a week [...]

Writer River

Interesting idea by the unstoppable Tom Johnson - Writer River, a DIGG clone for Technical Communications posts. WriterRiver.com is a social news site for technical communicators, which means you can both submit and vote on news stories. When you submit stories, they initially appear on the Upcoming Stories tab. After a story receives 5 votes, it moves to the Front Page Stories tab. Check it out @ http://writerriver.com/

Gordon, I think that the Flash badges are all that is available for now. I added on to The Content Wrangler blog (near bottom of the page) and it appears to be unobtrusive (no jumping, twirling, flashing). I would image a text banner would be a good request, so I'll ask the developers if they can add this to their prioritized task list. Thanks for the idea.

Oh and sometimes you have to click on the person's picture to get to their page, and then you'll see an Add link under their picture.

Hi Gordon - I found that if I was looking for something (like, say, adding a friend, adding an RSS feed) and I couldn't find it, if I went over to IE7 instead of Firefox, a link or button would be there where it hadn't been before. :) That said, anywhere you see a photo of a member, you should see a link that says "Add as friend" below it if they aren't already your friend. I see photos in the right-hand column with links below them. I'll add you as a friend now, friend!
