A Day In The Life of An Agile Writer

I've been asked to speak about Technical Communications and Agile to the Austin Agile group. They specifically want to know what it's like (A Day In The Life) to be a Tech Writer in an Agile (Scrum) shop. I have my experiences and that of a few others but I'm looking to get some different perspectives so I can show the whole picture. If you have some good (or bad) stories, anecdotes, or experiences to relate, I'd be grateful if you would hop on over here to the… Continue

The Sweet Smell Of Success

My boss just got back from a trip to Europe with the following comments for documentation from a HUGE customer: • The customer would like more tutorials in the doc. My VP told him we were writing a lot more tutorials and patterning them after the existing one so we’d love their feedback and insight. • The customer said they’d like to see more “best practices” in the doc such as how to do complex tasks. The customer is actually interested and willing to talk with the Doc team to specifically ad… Continue

A Brief History Of Me...

I grew up a child of the Great Industrial Depression of the 1970s. My Dad was an industrial plant manager and we'd move into a town just long enough to close the factory (he probably could have been a consultant in that sort of thing if consultants in that sort of thing existed then). When I was in 8th grade, I received a scholarship to a special summer science camp as a child of a Migrant Worker, unfortunately I couldn't go...we moved to Florida a month before the camp... I attended the Univer… Continue

Thanks for the add, Mike. We just started using Agile in the last 60 days here at Pervasive, so it's especially good to have you as a friend.

Warmest regards-

Hi Mike,

I enjoyed your presentation at AgileAustin today. I'll let you know how things go with trying to introduce more formal Agile practices to my dev teams.

Hi MIke--
I enjoyed meeting you last week. Hope we can move forward with more discussions about agile and content projects. Seattle is very cold and rainy after Philadelphia--we even had snow in the mountains a couple of nights ago. :-)

I didn't get to go to the conference, unfortunately, but I pulled the materials from the STC site. Thanks so much for your effort!

Best Practices of Global Production Information

Now, more than ever, organizations need to effectively communicate global product information if they are to operate successfully on the world stage. Traditionally, though, organizations have faced a fragmented landscape of technology solutions that are bolted together, but don’t work together. Organizations have had to integrate these technologies themselves and cope with the resulting overhead.
It doesn’t have to be like this. Read our new whitepaper, Best Practices of Global Product Information to find out how you can streamline and enhance the processes you use of communicate global product information.

The Flavors of CM: LCMS and LMS

A lot of the systems we tend to talk about are focused on either technical publications or on generalized publishing. But there’s another focus area for content management that we haven’t talked about a lot that should be talked about: Learning materials, aka training materials. Enter Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning [...]

Content Management – A blessing and a curse or how I became overhead…

As I sit here in Bora Bora, I can finally take a breath. It’s 6 pm. I have been trying since 5 pm to tear myself away from my cube so that I could take a few minutes to clarify my thoughts regarding our Content Management System. Lest you think I am sitting on a [...]

Serving Multiple Touch-points – Old School Tricks

As the old adage goes, “It costs more to find a customer than to keep a customer”. You can keep your customers satisfied by knowing them better and serving up the most appropriate content in the form that suits them best. In the old days, we could get by using manual means to manipulate corporate [...]

The Flavors of CM: Content Management vs Document Management

There are many different perspectives around on what content management is and isn’t and what a Content Management system needs to do. According to that font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, “A content management system (CMS) is computer software used to create, edit, manage, and publish content in a consistently organized fashion.
