FRC continues to move along. Like you, I've been saturated since June and focused in other areas of professional development in the past couple of months. As life generally picks up pace in the fall, I hope that members share more of their thoughts and questions on this growing area (you are going to owe me a beer :->). Otherwise, even in hiatus, I have been collecting some references and thoughts to share. I look forward to continuing the discussion and am glad you are a part of it.

Yep. The term is largely an arbitrary division of one thing - single sourcing - into two categories.

How does this affect my consulting work?

From one perspective, not at all. You're still doing the same kind of work and generating the same kinds of output using the same kinds of features - variables, snippets, conditionality, etc.

But from another perspective, it has affected the consulting and training that I offer in two ways. I have to explain what it is so that if you later wind up in front of a client who's asking for multi-channel publishing, you'll know what that client is talking about and can respond coherently. I also have to be sure that you can watch this new development in case it eventually does diverge from traditional single sourcing and develop its own tools and methodologies.

Well, near as I can tell, it's what we're already doing. We are using Flare to single source content for print (Frame) manuals and webhelp and it's working very nicely.

I'm relieved to find that we are keeping up with the latest approaches (if not the latest names for them).

Tell me about how this relates to your consulting work. Are you helping clients to set up single-sourcing/multi-channel publishing solutions?

You said, "This profession is definitely going in some unexpected directions..."

No doubt! It is interesting, but it's sometimes hard to know where to focus my energy and attention. It seems like there's always so much more to learn than I can keep up with. That is the best boredom prevention though. And I know I'm not alone.

Now excuse me, I have to go find out what multi-channel publishing is. ;)

Hi Neil--We worked together at ILX years ago on a RoboHelp project and used you as a consultant. You were a great help then, and it looks like you've been really busy keeping on top of the industry. We use AuthorIT now, and it's a great change. I look forward to reading your articles.

Oh, I've been reading your stuff for years.

Most recently I appreciated your Accounting 101 article in the last Intercom and I am looking forward to the follow-up in the next issue. That is an area of business that I understand very little about. And I always read your "bleeding edge" articles. Good stuff! :)

P.S. I'll try to get a picture up soon.

Organizations have had to integrate these technologies themselves and cope with the resulting overhead.
It doesn’t have to be like this. Read our new whitepaper, Best Practices of Global Product Information to find out how you can streamline and enhance the processes you use of communicate global product information.

The Flavors of CM: LCMS and LMS

A lot of the systems we tend to talk about are focused on either technical publications or on generalized publishing. But there’s another focus area for content management that we haven’t talked about a lot that should be talked about: Learning materials, aka training materials. Content Management – A blessing and a curse or how I became overhead…

The Flavors of CM: Content Management vs Document Management
